Abstract

Born in Dublin and classically educated at Trinity College, James Henry (1798-1876) practised as a doctor for more than twenty years before an inheritance enabled him to focus on the textual study of Virgil's Aeneid. Travelling extensively across Europe, Henry conferred with eminent scholars and consulted numerous manuscripts. His early findings (also reissued in this series) first appeared in 1853. After the death of his wife, he was accompanied and assisted by his sole surviving daughter, Katherine Olivia, who would also predecease him, three years after their final return to Ireland in 1869. Published between 1873 and 1892, this monumental commentary was seen through the press by colleagues following Henry's own death. Reflecting its author's passion and personality, the work remains a landmark in Virgilian scholarship, both celebrated and critiqued for its original and challenging approach. This final volume, comprising an index of names and matters, and an index of authors quoted, appeared in 1892.

Abstract

"The present work is an expansion and further elaboration of the doctrine set forth in my Outlines of Psychology. Although the mode of arrangement and of treatment will in the main be found to be similar, the book may be described as a new and independent publication. It is specially intended for those who desire a fuller presentment of the latest results of psychological research than was possible in a volume which aimed at being elementary and practical. Hence much more space has been given to the new developments of "physiological" and experimental psychology, to illustrations of psychological principles in the phenomena of racial and animal life, of insanity and hypnotism. At the same time, an effort has been made to illustrate the obscurity and possibilities of debates about many of the problems of the science, and to aid the reader in arriving at a judicial conclusion on these points by historical references to the main diversities of doctrine. In this way it is hoped that the treatise will find its proper place beside the Outlines, the success of which would have made it a fatuity on my part to try to supplant it. For volume one, see record 200810395-000." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"In this new edition I have endeavoured to make the Outlines of Psychology a more complete introduction to the science. While thus considering the needs of the general student, I have, in this American edition, borne in mind the special requirements of that large class of readers of my works in America who desire to have pointed out the connections between psychology and education. Accordingly, although in view of the publication, since the first appearance of this work, of a volume specially designed for teachers (The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology), I have been able in this new edition to reduce the sections dealing with the applications of principles to educational methods, I have thought it desirable to retain these sections in a condensed form. They need not, I think, be an obstacle to the general student, who is not particularly interested in education; yet they are, I trust, sufficient to suggest to the teacher lines of application, and to retain for the work something of that practical character which, I have reason to believe, has recommended it to my friendly American readers"--

Abstract

"In preparing the following abridgment of my larger work, the Principles of Psychology, my chief aim has been to make it more directly available for class-room use. For this purpose I have omitted several whole chapters and rewritten, others. I have left out all the polemical and historical matter, all the metaphysical discussions and purely speculative passages, most of the quotations, all the book-references, and (I trust) all the impertinences, of the larger work, leaving to the teacher the choice of orally restoring as much of this material as may seem to him good, along with his own remarks on the topics successively studied. Knowing how ignorant the average student is of physiology, I have added brief chapters on the various senses. In this shorter work the general point of view, which I have adopted as that of 'natural science, ' has, I imagine, gained in clearness by its extrication from so much critical matter and its more simple and dogmatic statement. About two fifths of the volume is either new or rewritten, the rest is 'scissors and paste.' I regret to have been unable to supply chapters on pleasure and pain, aesthetics, and the moral sense. Possibly the defect may be made up in a later edition, if such a thing should ever be demanded"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved).
